Should I feel pain when practicing the exercises?

A little discomfort is okay, but you don’t want to feel sharp or shooting pain, or have pain that persists for a 24 to 48-hour period after you work out. “This is where the concept of a ‘movement sweet spot’ comes in,” says Dr. Kimbrough. “If you do a squat and feel some soreness which goes away as soon as you stop the exercise, that’s okay. But if it really hurts, or the discomfort persists for a day or two, that may be a sign that you’ve done more than your body is ready for.”

Research shows that exercise therapy helps you heal from meniscus tears, stresses Dr. Kimbrough. “The old train of thought was complete rest, but we know now that if you do that, muscles can weaken and stiffen, which worsens pain,” she explains. “Exercise will help to improve your symptoms, as long as you do it gradually and listen to your body.”

It’s a good idea to see a physical therapist if you experience any symptoms of a meniscus tear, which include knee pain, stiffness, swelling, a catching or locking of your knee, a sensation of your knee giving way, or the inability to move your knee through its full range of motion, says Dr. Kimbrough.
If you suspect a meniscal tear because of an acute injury — usually resulting in immediate swelling and an inability to bear weight on your leg — go to urgent care, or see your primary care provider as soon as possible, advises Dr. Kimbrough. They can run other imaging tests, like an X-ray or MRI, to rule out other causes of acute knee pain, like a knee fracture.
